This issue brings follow-up from two previous columns:
Published in the July-Sept. 2008 issue of this newsletter, with the promise that more information would be forthcoming in later issues, was a list of words derived from the Welsh.
coracle -- from corwgl
corgi -- from cor, "dwarf" + gi (soft mutation of ci), "dog".
druid -- 'derwydd', possibly derived from 'derw' meaning 'oak'.
flannel -- The Oxford English Dictionary states that the etymology of this word is "uncertain", but that it is likely to have come from the Welsh gwlanen, "flannel". (Another suggested source is Old French flaine, "blanket", but pretend you didn’t read that in this newsletter.)
This column in the 2009 February-June issue featured an article about giving your home a Welsh name (a book on the same topic was reviewed in the Library column, and a helpful website was discussed in the previous issue of DT) For those of you still working on that project, here are several more resources:
Two web pages: the meanings of Welsh place names at www.croeso-betws.org.uk/iaith/meaning.htm and common prefixes used in Welsh house names at www.houseandgardenplaques.co.uk/prefixes.php.
Two books translating Welsh house names into English: “The Small Booklet of Welsh House Names” available at http://maddy2001-ivil.tripod.com/welshhousenames/index.html and “A Pocketbook of Welsh House-Names” from www.gwales.com.
What Welsh word/s do you remember from your childhood? Were you taught Welsh by a parent or grandparent, or does one particular word or phrase mean something special to you? Will you share your memories with us? Send a letter to WSCO Dragon Tales, PO Box 12023, Columbus, OH, 43212, or write to the editor at dragontalesnews(at)sbcglobal(dot)net.

Folding, fastening, labeling, affixing postage -- Carole Edwards Haley has helped with these newsletter tasks since my first issue -- we use her kitchen table -- and Pam Jones joined our team a number of issues ago. My sincere thanks goes to these wonderful women. Diolch yn fawr iawn! -- The Editor
