WSCO Annual Family Picnic

Charlotte Prior

Date: Saturday, July 18, 2009

Time: 5 pm to 10 pm

Where: Blendon Woods Metro Park, Dogwood Shelter; 4265 E. Dublin-Granville Rd. / Old State Rte. 161; Westerville, Ohio (directions on page 12)

It’s summer and time for picnics!  We had such a good time last year – so we are going to outdo ourselves in the cooking, baking, dancing and singing this year.

Bring that new salad or different yummy dessert you have wanted to try out.  Also you need to bring your table services and beverages for your group along with that hot or cold dish to share.  Ice will be provided.

Like last year, we will eat first so hot food will be hot and cold food will be cold.

Membership Chair Evan Jones graciously volunteered to be auctioneer this year and, while your supper is settling, he’ll be auctioning a few items from The Welsh Store inventory.  We’re glad to have on the job again those able assistants, Donna Boyce and Tegwyn Lantz.

Next, Donna’s Welsh folk dancers will perform a couple dances and then encourage us to join in the dancing – it’s scary, but fun to get up and just try the simple steps!

The Columbus Welsh Singing Society will sing a few favorites, directed by Ann GillardJohn Davids will accompany the group.  We will all have an opportunity to request some favorites to close out the evening.  Bring your hymn books – we will also have a few to loan out.

Flag Man Roger Roberts will bring his flags again -- they have quite a history behind them – and Beth Ransopher will be there with WSCO’s new quad-fold display board and a supply of the recently revised WSCO brochures.

The tea towels you brought last year to share were colorful and informative.  Please bring them again along with any Welsh flags you might have.  We will find a way to display them.

WSCO Overnight Trip to Pittsburgh for National Gymanfa Ganu

Bob Donaldson

Would you like to attend the 2009 National Gymanfa Ganu (North American Festival of Wales) but dread the drive?  WSCO is coming to your aid!

The 2009 NAFOW, sponsored by the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association, will be held in Pittsburgh, PA on September 3-6 at the Pittsburgh Hilton.  The Welsh Society of Central Ohio is sponsoring an overnight (Sept. 5-6) round trip to Pittsburgh from Columbus.

Our large, comfortable bus (with restroom on board) will leave from the southeast corner of Kingsdale Shopping Center in Upper Arlington at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 5.  We should arrive at our Pittsburgh hotel around 12 noon to check in and then we’ll go downtown to the Gymanfa site.

NAFOW conference registration ($55) is required only to attend certain events.  The events and their fees are: the Grand Concert on Saturday evening, $30 registered, $40 non-registered, and the Sunday afternoon Gymanfa, no charge if registered, $15 non-registered.  A complete list of events will be provided.

Here’s what you can do for free: After Glow Singing, Saturday from 10 p.m. to midnight; singing after the After Glow; Welsh Market Place, which will be open on Saturday and Sunday; the Welsh church service (with some English) on Sunday morning; seeing old friends; making new ones; and brushing up on your heritage.

Directly after the Sunday afternoon Gymanfa session, we will assemble in the lobby of the Pittsburgh Hilton in preparation for leaving for Columbus.  Our bus will leave at 5:00 p.m.  Due to the high cost of activities and meals at NAFOW, we will stop at a local restaurant after the Sunday afternoon session and dine on our own.

Negotiations are under way with several hotels located a short distance from downtown Pittsburgh.  We believe we can agree on a very attractive price.  When this information is available, we will notify those who have let us know they are interested or have registered for the trip.
