2008 WSCO Gymanfa Ganu and Te Bach

Charlotte Prior

The Welsh Society of Central Ohio celebrated its 60th Gymanfa Ganu in Central College Presbyterian Church at 2:30 pm Sunday, October 19, 2008.  The organ prelude “Concert Fantasia on a Welsh March” (Men of Harlech), James Hildreth performing, was a grand beginning.

Bob Donaldson gave the invocation (also the benediction).  Rev. Malcolm Davis welcomed us to the church.  WSCO president Ken Evans welcomed us and also invited everyone to stay for the Te Bach.  Mary Ellen Morgan graciously presented “Welshman of the Year” to Myron Cherry for his cheerful, steady and long service to our society.

Ann Gillard, leader of the Columbus Welsh Singing Society, was an enthusiastic conductor.  Excellent job, Ann!  We all enjoyed singing those familiar hymns in Welsh and English.

Cerddoriaeth Arbennig, the three tenors of Central College Presbyterian Church, was wonderful!  Senior Minister Rev. Malcolm Davis, Rev. Monte Clearman and David Meulenberg, Chancel Choir Director, sang exceptionally well together and as soloists also!  We want to hear more from them.  Their congregation is most fortunate to have these three serving their church.

James Hildreth finished this Gymanfa Ganu with “Improvisation on Cwm Rhondda,” a fitting conclusion for our celebration of 60 Gymanfa Ganu years.

Over 100 people enjoyed the Te Bach in Ballard Hall.  The new arrangement of refreshments, chairs and tables made it easy to fill our cups and plates and find a place to sit and have a cozy chat.  A huge THANK YOU to those who always are so generous with Welsh cakes, candy, fancy cookies and yummy breads.

Mary Ellen Morgan, chair of the Gymanfa, deserves a big “thank you” for her work, as does Donna Boyce, Te Bach Chair, and her helpers for making the Te Bach so comfy and sociable.

2008 Te Bach Diolch Yn Fawr Iawn  (thank you very much)

Donna Boyce

At the risk of leaving someone important out, I will attempt to name the “major players” for you – the folks most responsible for presenting the successful event that more than 100 people enjoyed.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to: Myron Cherry; Gwen Baxter and Diana Wafe and the hands that helped them prep the food trays; Laura Thomas and her beverage table helpers; Tegwyn Lantz and Carole Edwards Haley who helped me prepare and set up Ballard Hall; our veteran sandwich makers Helen Davis and Joan Bash; this year’s kitchen clean-up crew Pam and Evan Jones and Ken Evans who evidently didn’t get enough of that job last year; the newest person on our team, Beth Ransopher; and all the many, many people who donated those goodies for the food tables.

In addition, I thank all of YOU who attended the Te Bach and enjoyed the food and good Welsh camaraderie.  We do it for you -- your enjoyment makes the effort worthwhile.
