Member Highlights

Continued from page 5

Tamara “Tom” Evans flew to Maine in late July to spend some time at the Appalachian Mountain Club near Acadia National Park.  Tom and several friends slept in platform tents and, although there were options for biking, sailing, kayaking, swimming, and island excursions, Tom (an avid kayaker) spent much of her time relaxing and reading in the library, with afternoon hikes after rainy mornings.  Her first few days in Maine were spent visiting a cousin who lives in the area.

WSCO members known to have attended NAFOW in Chicago are: Stacy Evans, Ann and Jim Gillard, David C. Jones, Jack and Ann Lewis and their daughter Jill, Margaret and Lew Lloyd, Joan Owen Mandry, Shirley McKee, Charlotte and Stanton Prior and Joe Sooby.

Listed are the WSCO members and friends who went on the bus trip to Venedocia (see article on page 4) with those having Venedocia ancestors designated in underlined italics: Joan Bash, Gene Beard, Sylvia Blaney, Donna Boyce, Myron Cherry, Barbara Clark, Helen Davis, Janice Davis, Bob Donaldson, Ken Evans, Thomas Gabriel and his sister Luanne Gabriel, Carole Edwards Haley, Evan & Pam Jones, Lynn Jones, Lowell & Judith (Jones) Kreeger (Evan Jones’ sister), Teg Lantz, Tom & Joyce Lloyd, Mary Ellen Morgan, Ruth Quillin, Sue & Bob Ranck, Beth Ransopher, Bette Thomas, and Diana Wafe.  WSCO members Kay & Chuck Caudy live one hour south of our first stop and met us at the Allen County Museum before they continued on to the church in Venedocia, and members Megg Hukill and Marian Davis were also at the gymanfa.

In late August and the first week of September, Dianne and Homer Williams were in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

We found out in August that Floe Jones, the only living founder of the Society, moved last November to The Forum.  She has the same phone number that is listed in the Member Roster but if you need her address, contact the WSCO corresponding secretary at (614) 470-4999 or centralohiowelsh[at]aol[dot]com.

Keep track of your WSCO member friends by checking the Roster changes at the end of Member Highlights – also – help us out!  If you know of a WSCO member who has moved, let us know so we can make sure they receive DT at their new address.

Other Happenings

Ever hear of “Locks of Love” – an organization that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children suffering from medical hair loss?  They take donations of 10-inch-minimum-length ponytails or braids – that explains why you’ve seen Donna Boyce sporting a ponytail for the past several years – her hair is extremely slow-growing.  Watch to see if Myron Cherry’s new ponytail hits the minimum length faster than Donna’s does.

Carole Edwards Haley’s son and family were here from Maryland for a week near the end of July – that’s why you didn’t see her and daughter Tegwyn at the picnic this year.  Teg was even able to take a couple days off work to spend time with her nieces.  A few more of their summer Saturday’s were spent with other visiting relatives – a cousin of Carole’s husband who stopped on his way from Florida to Cleveland and an aunt and uncle of Teg’s from Texas who guided her on a “tour” to Huron County and the farm where her father grew up.

Shirley Shines at NAFOW

WSCO board member and CWSS alto and language coach, Shirley McKee, won the adult Welsh learner’s recitation division at the recent North American Festival of Wales (NAFOW) in Chicago, IL.

The Eisteddfod Committee designates the recitation piece, which may not be read from the text.  This year’s set piece was the poem “Y Blodau Melyn” (“The Yellow Flowers” or “Buttercups”) by I.D. Hooson, published in a book of poetry for Welsh-speaking children in 1946.  Shirley chose to interpret the piece as “Hooson’s words of encouragement to children who had been saddened by the war.”

Also, Shirley was elected to the National Welsh American Foundation (NWAF) board of directors in May of this year and attended her first board meeting during NAFOW.  The NWAF honors work done by North Americans of distinguished merit at an annual banquet held during the NAFOW festivities.

Llongyfarchiadau, Shirley!
