Member Highlights

We were notified shortly after the last newsletter went out of the death of Life member Gwyneth Pugh who passed away Sunday, December 9, 2007.  She was 96 years old.  Gwyneth was born in Cwmavon, Wales and was a Gahanna, Ohio resident for a number of years.  Our condolences go out to Nancy Pugh who is also a Life member.

Life member Richard Vaughn "Dick" Pryce, Jr., age 80, of Upper Arlington and formerly a longtime resident of Warren, Ohio, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2008.  He was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and was the owner of Pryce Champion Drug for over 40 years.  Dick is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellen (Griffith) Pryce; daughters, Deborah Pryce, Toni (Thomas) Sampson, Diane (John) Fields, and Madeline (Dan) Parks; son, Richard V. (Angela) Pryce III, and 11 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Caroline. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University and was in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was a generous supporter of his community and served many years as a school board member and active church member and was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. Dick was a member of several lodges, was past President of Trumbull County Pharmaceutical Association, and a YMCA Indian Guide. He enjoyed a number of hobbies but, above all else, he loved spending time with his family and dear friends.

Another Life member, Delma Jane "Dee" Davis Cooper, age 85, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008 at Riverside Methodist Hospital.  A long time member of the Welsh Society of Central Ohio, the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association, and Covenant Presbyterian Church, she had been a nurse for many years.  Dee especially enjoyed our local cymanfoedd and her favorite hymn was Gwelfa.  Her ancestors came to Ohio from a Cardiganshire farm named Ty Nant (not to be confused with the water bottling site) and her pride in her Welsh heritage was passed along to her children Michael (Cathy) Cooper, Jane (James) Cooper-Hill, Jacquelyn R. (Dwight Hurd) Cooper; and to her three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  She was the widow of Donald R. Cooper.

Welcome Wagon

WSCO is happy to put out the welcome mat for a number of new members.  Maria Teresa “Mabli” Agozzino was already known to some of us because she joined the CWSS in the autumn of 2007 and has been to a folk dance class.

Gary Baker, a member for a number of years, was a central Ohio resident who moved to Florida a few years ago and has now taken advantage of the “family membership” option -- croeso to Eric, Jason and Ryan Baker.

A new member living in West Mansfield, Ohio, is Phyllis Morgan Gregory, who joined WSCO in time to be listed on the member roster but missed the printing of the last newsletter, so we get to welcome her this time.

Some of you have already met Laura Jenkins, who also joined CWSS, was with us at the Statehouse flag-raising ceremony, and was one of the raffle winners at our March 1st St. David’s Day celebration.

The WSCO family also welcomes Tom Miller (a Cincinnati resident and son of long-time WSCO member Marilynn Miller), who is, himself, welcoming a new member to his family.  Tom and his wife, Barb, adopted a Welsh Corgi puppy and have named her Bella.  The agreement was that Tom, who really, really wanted a Corgi, got to make the breed choice if Barb, who wanted a Golden Retriever, got to make the name choice, and Barb’s Italian heritage obviously came into play.

Going to the Chapel

Joe Speakman, son of Joe and Sue, grandson of Peggy and Joe, was married to Laura Rivera, his high school sweetheart, in an outdoor ceremony on June 21st.  The ceremony and reception took place at Cherry Valley Lodge in Newark, Ohio.  Joe’s sister Anne was one of the six bridesmaids and James Crownover, Peggy and Joe’s other grandson and son of their daughter Becky, was also a member of the wedding party.

Myron Cherry’s daughter, Laura, who frequently helps at our October Te Bach when her visits home from Florida coincide with that weekend, and her fiancée, Burak Akgerman, were married June 21st in the lovely sanctuary of the Central College Presbyterian Church, and WSCO’s own Columbus Welsh Singing Society sang for the ceremony.  Laura’s sister, Diana Wafe, was a member of the wedding party.
