We are sorry to tell you of the deaths of two long-time members of the WSCO family.

Dr. David "Dafydd" Lloyd Mandry, 90, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007.  He was born in Martins Ferry, served with the 33rd Bomb Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps in Okinawa during WWII and graduated as an M.D. in 1950 from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.

He was director of music and organist at Calvary Baptist Church in Ravenswood, West Virginia. After moving to Lisbon, Ohio, upon his retirement, he joined the choir of the New Lisbon Presbyterian Church.  He learned to play the harp at age 70 and also enjoyed painting.

He was president of the WNGGA from 1979 to 1981; was a founding member on the Advisory Council (USA) of National Welsh-American Foundation; was elected to the Women’s Welsh Clubs of America Board for the Welsh Home in Rocky River, Ohio and was elected the first male officer in its history; and had taken an active role in Ohio Welsh Societies.

Survivors include his wife, the former Joan (Evans) Owen and his family by marriage, Dr. Roderic L. and Linda Owen of Staunton, Va., and their three sons, Bryn, Evan, and Daniel; and Marian Owen Bieniek of Martinsberg, W.Va. and her sons John and Paul.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Mandry, and a sister, Ann Treharne and brother-in-law Jack Treharne.  Ann and Jack were also members of WSCO.

Natalie Ann Post, 75, of Columbus, passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. Born to the late Stanley and Mabel Jenkins, Natalie is also preceded in death by a son, Jonathan Wiley Post and a brother, David Jenkins.

Natalie was Vice-President of Post Industries in Columbus for 42 years. She enjoyed many years of singing with the Blendon Senior Chorus and WSCO’s Columbus Welsh Singing Society.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne; daughters, Joann (Willie) Rhodes, Susan (Richard) Hughes; son, Earl (Maureen) Post; sister, Caroline Goodrich; grandchildren, Jennifer and Alexander Rhodes, Jessica (Brian) Meek, Robert, Richard, Wayne, Gabriel, and Edythe Hughes; great-grandchildren, Lillian Rhodes and Leaf Hughes; nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends.

Welcome Wagon

Welcome to new WSCO members Cathy and Buck Winterhoff.  Some of you may remember that Cathy was one of the raffle winners the evening of the 2007 St. David’s Day dinner.

Marietta Riggs Schumann is back as an active member after several years absence and it was great to see her at the te bach after the gymanfa in October.  Marietta was with us at the 2006 flag-raising at the Ohio Statehouse and presented the bouquet of daffodils to the representative from the Governor’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. Check the new roster (to be distributed March 1st) for her new address and phone number.

Going to the Chapel

Myron Cherry’s daughter, Laura, who frequently helps at our October Te Bach when her visits home from Florida coincide with that weekend, had her fiancée, Burak Akgerman, with her at our 2007 event and started him off properly in the “family tradition” department by putting him to work helping to set up the tables and chairs in Ballard Hall.  A June, 2008, wedding is planned in the lovely sanctuary at the Central College Presbyterian Church, and WSCO’s own Columbus Welsh Singing Society is scheduled to help with the musical part of the celebration.

It is with great joy that we learned of the engagement of our “official” gymanfa organist, Jim Hildreth, and his favorite flutist, Valorie Adams.  It seems that there will be late summer nuptials.  Best wishes to the darling couple.

Maternity Ward

Lou Jindra and his wife, Jeanne Jones Jindra, WSCO board member and Director of the Madog Center for Welsh Studies at the University of Rio Grande, welcomed their second grandchild, Lauren Elizabeth Hinsch, on November 3rd. The happy parents are Erin and Brett Hinsch of Jackson, OH.

The news from Wales is that a former Director of the Madog Center, Kara Lewis, and her husband, Graham Jones, are expecting their second child in May.  Welcoming the new addition along with her parents will be their toddler daughter, Tarian, who was born in August, 2006.

Anthony and Laressa Price welcomed their beautiful blue-eyed, blonde daughter on December 13th at 4:39 am.  Kyndra Dee-Ann weighed in at 8 ½ lbs. and was 19 ¾ inches long.  With Daddy’s Welsh and Mommy’s Irish ancestors, the Prices say “we chose the name and the way we spelled it because we want to keep our Celtic heritage alive.”
