Timothy Grubb, step-son of Ronda Griffith-Grubb and son of her husband, Chuck Grubb, left July 4th for his next US Naval assignment. He will spend the next three years at Yokosuka, Japan, on the flagship for the Commander of the US 7th Fleet, the USS Blue Ridge. Tim, as a child, used to attend the St. David's Day programs as well as help fold, staple, and mail Dragon Tales when Ronda served as the editor.
Former WSCO treasurer, membership chair, and webmaster, Bob Penry, and his wife, Mary Ann, attended the WSCO annual picnic -- they were visiting in Ohio from Florida. They are talking about moving back to Ohio and possibly building a home in the London area.
The day after the July picnic, Charlotte and Stanton Prior left for Boston to “squeeze the grandchildren.”
Several of the members who didn’t make it to the picnic were off on other adventures: Meredydd Williams went to Wales for the eisteddfod; Shirley McKee was off to Cwrs Cymraeg, the weeklong residential language course that was held this year in Albany, New York; Mary Ellen Morgan and Bob Donaldson were also in New York, but were attending a wedding. Helen Davis was out of state to a cousin’s funeral but Joan Bash reported to us that Helen is doing well and that she appreciated all the good wishes sent to her by WSCO members this past year regarding the ups-and-downs with her health.
In June, Ronda Griffith-Grubb and her husband, Chuck Grubb, purchased her maternal grandmother's home in Hamden, OH – their original intent was to use it on weekends and vacations, and for retirement. At the beginning of September, Ronda submitted her resignation from the WSCO board because the Grubbs became so enamored of the house and surrounding area during their every-weekend house renovation trips that they decided to sell their home in Columbus and move to Hamden and commute until they are able to retire. Ronda’s mother's family in Hamden is mostly German (with a Scotch-Irish thrown in there and, of course, the Welsh Davis). Hamden was originally in Jackson County until the 1850's when Vinton County was formed from pieces of Ross, Meigs, Athens, Hocking, and Jackson counties. So, when there, Ronda will be very, very close to the Welsh Mecca of Oak Hill and Rio Grande. Ronda has previously served on the board and as newsletter editor.
Liz James took advantage of a visit to her son and her brother in the Washington D.C. area to spend some time at NAFOW. Liz’s brother was in the hospital at the time and WSCO hopes he is healthy again and back home.
Two other WSCO members combined NAFOW with a family visit – Tegwyn Lantz and her mother, Carole Edwards Haley, stayed with Teg’s brother/Carole’s son and his family in Gaithersburg, MD, for a couple nights, spent two days attending seminars, and then went back to Gaithersburg for a couple more nights before heading back to Ohio.
WSCO corresponding secretary and newsletter editor, Donna Boyce, ended her annual visit with her cousin (not on the Welsh side of the family), who lives just northeast of D.C. in Maryland, by driving into Alexandria to join the other WSCO folks at NAFOW.
Tim Jilg, former WSCO board member and language class teacher and former Director of the Madog Center for Welsh Studies at the University of Rio Grande, is now living in Wales and loves being back there. He is working in the Welsh Department at Cardiff University as a research assistant, looking at reasons why people drop out of Welsh courses and what can be done to retain them. He says that it is interesting work, the job is “challenging but good,” and that he is thoroughly enjoying it. Tim was visiting in central Ohio for a couple days in mid-September and hopes to be back around Christmas time.

We apologize to James Evans and Meredydd Williams, both Life members, who were inadvertently left off the recently-published membership list.
