WSCO Celebrates St. David’s Day, 2007

Annual Meeting and Dinner

WSCO celebrated St. David’s Day on Saturday, February 24th at the Clintonville Woman’s Club.  The highlight of the afternoon was the Welsh cheese and beer tasting seminar presented by board members Dianne and Homer Williams.  Dianne selected a variety of cheeses to be sampled along with Homer’s homemade cwrw.  A big diolch yn fawr goes to them both for all the hard work they put into making this enjoyable seminar the success it was.

At 5 pm the Annual Meeting was held, with an election of new board members and officers, and a discussion and approval of a number of changes to WSCO’s constitution.  (a list of the current board members is on page 4 of this issue of DT and a copy of the constitution can be found on our website at http://www.centralohiowelsh.org, or contact WSCO at (614) 470-4999 or centralohiowelsh@aol.com for a copy)  President Mary Ellen Morgan ended her term and “turned over the gavel” to incoming-president Homer Williams.

A dinner buffet followed and the meeting attendees moved to the dining room where the tables were decorated with lovely daffodil bouquets donated by Pam and Evan Jones

After dinner, raffle tickets were pulled for selections from the inventory of the Welsh Store along with several donated items.  Carole Edwards Haley donated a Welsh dragon light switch plate which was included with a collection of “related” items, Roger Roberts donated a St. David flag, and the donator of the fluffy lamb remains anonymous.

The happy raffle winners were, left to right: Helen Davis, Ann Gillard, Carol Philipps, Wayne Post, Carole Edwards Haley, Pam Jones, Tony Konecny, Charlotte Prior, Cathy Winterhoff, and Joan Bash.

We rounded out the evening with a few selections sung by the Columbus Welsh Singing Society and group singing led by Ann Gillard, who kept things light and lively with a Welsh song sung in rounds and a phonetic version of “Ar Hyd y Nos” so everyone could attempt the song in Welsh.

Many thanks to the people who helped at the registration desk and to Roger Roberts for bringing his collection of flags, maps, old postcards, and other items that were of interest to many people.

St. David’s Day at the Ohio Statehouse

Ken Evans

At noon, March 1, 2007, with some snow still on the ground and a chilly, damp breeze blowing, the annual Welsh flag-raising was held on the West Plaza of the Statehouse.

The Columbus Welsh Singing Society was there to sing “Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau”, “Calon Lan”, and “Ar Hyd y Nos”, directed by Ann Gillard.

The rain stopped and the sun shined briefly when Ken Evans presented Representative Clyde Evans with a Welsh dragon paper- weight (those paperweights are magical!)

A car full of folks drove up from the Madog Center for Welsh Studies at the University of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, Ohio.  Jeanne Jones Jindra, Madog Center Assistant Director, and Mark Abell, Registrar, were accompanied by two students, Nerys Howells and Abby White.

At the end of the ceremony, Nerys helped teach us “Happy St. David’s Day” in Welsh.

Also in attendance were: Carrie Yost, Aide to Rep. Clyde Evans; Rep. Dan Dodd; Nancy Sully, Aide to Rep. Stephen Dyer; Lisa Allen, Aide to Rep. Jim Hughes; Rep. Gerald Stebelton and Aide Alyson Miles; Kathy Wellington, Aide to Rep. Peter Ujvagi; Bethany Rhodes, Aide to Rep. Lynn Wachtmann; Mike Evans, Aide to Rep. John Widowfield; Lyn Falk, Aide to Rep. Brian Williams; and WSCO members Weldon Abels, Gene Beard, Donna Boyce, John Davids, Jim Gillard, Liz James, Evan Jones, Lynn Jones, Natalie and Wayne Post, Charlotte and Stanton Prior,  Anne Powell Riley, Roger Roberts, and Bette Thomas.
