WSCO Annual Family Picnic

It is picnic time again – Saturday, July 21, 2007, 5 to 10 pm at the Hickory Grove Shelter in Blendon Woods Metro Park.  When going into the park, go to the left and watch for the signs and the Welsh flag.

We do not have access to the shelter before 5 pm so you do not need to be early.

There will be all that yummy food, Welsh dancers, and singing with the Columbus Welsh Singing Society.

Bring a dish to share, your table service, and something to drink (no alcohol in the park). A few box fans would be nice, too.

Everyone is welcome, and we expect a good, fun crowd.  For more information or questions, contact Charlotte Prior at (614) 470-4999 or email centralohiowelsh[at]aol[dot]com.

Welsh Bus Tour  -  Sat. Oct. 6, 2007

You won't want to miss this tour of the Welsh Hills (est. 1802) and the quaint New England Village of Granville (est. 1805).

Please arrive by 8:50 am so everyone can be settled on the bus -- departure time will be 9 am sharp from the parking lot behind the Worthington United Methodist Church, 600 North High Street in Worthington, Ohio.  We plan to leave Granville around 5 pm to be back in Worthington by 6 pm.

Tentative schedule:

We start at Bryn Du, originally owned by John Sutphin Jones (railroad & coal baron), passed down to his daughter, the colorful Sallie Jones Sexton, then owned by Dave Longaberger, and now the property of the Village of Granville. In this setting, Tom Philipps, a descendant of the Thomas Philipps and Theophilus Rees who founded the Welsh Hills settlement, will give a short talk about the history of the Welsh Hills, the families and the places you'll be seeing. He will have old pictures to share. His daughter, Carol Philipps, is creating a special brochure that folks can refer to throughout the tour, comparing old pictures with the modern views.

Next, a tour of "The Hills" -  starting in the Sharon Valley, then around to the Philipps Cemetery, the Baptist Church, and the Welsh Hills Cemetery, where Doris Davis will talk briefly about her early Welsh ancestors, the Davies & Evans families.  Ken Evans will talk briefly about his Alban & Brynele-Edwards ancestors’ time in the Welsh Hills before they went down to Jackson/Gallia County and founded the Moriah Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church in 1835.

LUNCH -- Since this is Denison University’s Parents’ Day weekend the restaurants may be crowded, so bring along a  “brown bag” lunch and we’ll picnic somewhere at a location yet to be decided -- maybe we’ll spread blankets at the cemetery!  A selection of bottled and canned beverages, such as water, soft drinks, lemonade, and iced tea, will be provided.

After lunch, Maggie Brooks of the Granville Area Historical Society will host a tour of their museum. There are other museums and old mansions to visit in downtown Granville along with gift and antique shops; Carol says there's a "FABULOUS" ice cream shop (may want to skip dessert at lunch) and a pub for those who prefer a cold drink. There are places to sit and people watch.

Since we are not planning to have dinner/supper while there, delaying dessert might be helpful. Tom is checking the museums and shops to make sure they'll be open (remembering the Jackson trip, also didn't see a Wal-Mart near Granville).

Cost is $40, (bring your own lunch).  Reserving your seat early is always helpful for planning the size of the bus, but please make your reservation no later than Sep. 8.  After that, and as your plans change, contact us to see if we have any vacant seats.

Secure your seat on the bus -- mail your payment, along with the registration form, by Sep. 8th, 2007.
